Entreat Me by Grace Draven
“Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders… but her father isn’t a very good one. Free to lend and reluctant to collect, he has loaned out most of his wife’s dowry and left the family on the edge of poverty–until Miryem steps in. Hardening her heart against her fellow villagers’ pleas, she sets out to collect what is owed–and finds herself more than up to the task. When her grandfather loans her a pouch of silver pennies, she brings it back full of gold.
But having the reputation of being able to change silver to gold can be more trouble than it’s worth–especially when her fate becomes tangled with the cold creatures that haunt the wood, and whose king has learned of her reputation and wants to exploit it for reasons Miryem cannot understand.“ GOODREADS
This is the best book I read in 2018. It’s eerie, fairy-tale like and romantic. Naomi Novik is definitely one of my all-time favorite writers. I love love love her portrayal of girls and women and their relationships with each other. Both her main and supporting characters are fleshed out and equally engaging to read about.
The story revolves around two heroines whose fates intertwine more and more as the plot unfolds. Their male love interests (one is the king of some kind of ice elves, the other the tsar who’s possessed by a fire demon) learn to appreciate and love them for their characters, skills and actions.
Spinning Silver features almost every trope I love:
“In
the vicinity of the liberated planet of Bajor, the Federation space
station Deep Space Nine guards the opening of a stable wormhole to
the far side of the galaxy.” (IMBD)
The
Star Trek universe is filled with aliens doing humans doing other
aliens doing so much space drama. Anyway out of all the different
Trek series Deep Space 9 was always my favorite because:
all
the characters were morally gray
a
minimum of Star Fleet self righteousness
my
favorite shape shifter Odo (Any shape. The
possibilities!)
the
Cardassians. My favorite was Gul Dukat who had a villainous crush o
Kira Neris. Very problematic. I loved it.
Kira
Neris who had a canon relationship with
Odo and the very hot villainous crush thing with Gul Dukat.
Babylon
5
“In
the mid 23rd Century, the Earth Alliance space station Babylon 5,
located in neutral territory, is a major focal point for political
intrigue, racial tensions and various wars over the course of five
years.” (IMBD)
A
space station full of morally gray and therefor very engaging
character? Also hot aliens? Sign me up!
My
favorites:
Lennier
(poster child for looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you)
G’Kar (virile lizard man) and his archenemy/buddy Londo Mollari (tentacles!)
canon relationship between ambassador Delenn and commander John Sheridan
Defiance
“In
the year 2046, it’s a new Earth – with new rules. Over thirty years
after various alien races arrived on Earth, the landscape is
completely altered, terraformed nearly beyond recognition. To the
town of Defiance, on what used to be St. Louis, comes the mysterious
Nolan (Grant Bowler) and his charge, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas). As
they settle into town – overseen by the mayor, Amanda Rosewater
(Julie Benz) and filled with residents like the powerful Rafe
McCawley (Graham Greene), enterprising lounge owner Kenya (Mia
Kirshner) and the ambitious, alien Tarrs (Tony Curran and Jaime
Murray) – events begin to unfold that threaten the fragile peace this
border town has fought for.” (IMBD)
My
favorites:
Successful
human father/alien daughter adoption story 🙂 They have so much fun
together, especially with guns.
Murderous white haired space elf mafia family. Very defunct, very engaging, I love them.
Alien
Nation
“A
flying saucer crashed in the Mojave Desert and its inhabitants turned
out to be alien slaves, bred to be super intelligent and strong, and
controllable by their Overseers. These Tenctonese, or “Newcomers”,
have been assimilated (sort of) into the population of Los Angeles.
One of them, George Francisco, is a police detective with a human
partner, Matthew Sikes. George and Matt fight crime together, while
learning to respect the other’s culture, and question his own. They
also fight prejudice, as personified by the Purists, and fear, in the
form of the unseen Overseers, who seek to regain control over their
slaves.” (IMBD)
Note:
There’s one movie from 1988 which predates this TV show and 5 TV
movies which take place after the events on the TV show.
My
favorites:
It’s
structured like a buddy cop police procedural just with an alien as
one part of the buddy duo.
canon interspecies relationship
Star
Gate, Farscape, Andromeda
I
was never heavily into these but I guess they belong on this list.
Honorable mention: Futurama
I
included only TV shows with aliens that have a more or less inhuman
appearance.
As someone not involved in the development of pillowfort but am a web developer, I think you should lower your expectations, but not for the reason you think.
Pillowfort is a baby. A newborn. A smol bab. If you were here during the early days of Tumblr, think of that.
Pillowfort simply cannot be the immediate solution to your woes. It needs to be nurtured and cared for to become a mature and happy adult.
If you want Pillowfort to work, they’ll need feedback, advice, bug reports, etc. This is a chance to make Pillowfort the Ao3 of Fanfiction.net. It’s not gonna happen overnight, you need to give it time and love and it’ll get there.
If you don’t want to pay money to get into the beta, that’s ok. It will be open to the public soon enough and you won’t have to pay a dime. Their financial model moving forward sounds good (a subscription fee for super extra features), but even an Ao3 model would work swell for them probably.
We’re living in an interesting time on the internet. Governments across the world are cracking down on content and yet community run websites are starting to thrive more and more.
Tumblr once upon a time was what Pillowfort is today, but this time, let’s make sure Pillowfort can stay independent from mega corporations.
yes this
most of the criticism i’ve seen of pf so far ultimately come back to this
is it an alright platform with a good community? yes. does it have a lot of potential? yes. does it have a lot of problems still being worked out? yes. are the staff open and responsive? absolutely. do i recommend it? yes, if you’re willing to live in a house while it’s being built.
but it’s not a ready-made replacement for tumblr. set your expectations accordingly.
Yes. If you get an invite and move to Pillowfort, then be a good and patient beta user. It takes time to shape the User Experience for a social media platform, and the backend will likely experience some issues with increased use.
That means that you’ll probably want to maintain at least two blogs while PF matures.
I finally got around to reading Receiver of Many a few weeks ago – a Hades/Persephone story by Kata Chthonia – and I was so addicted I finished the whole thing in two days. I loved it so much I had to paint it. Please take a look at the closeups! Persephone’s smile doesn’t show up very well on the full piece, and I’m fairly proud of the shadows on Aidoneus’ arm, haha.
I tried to keep elements that stood out to me, and the little things that made this story unique – Persephone twirls a lock of his hair, she wears a burgundy chiton, her sigil is the fires of Tartarus, while Aidon’s sigil is the darkness of the underworld. I wanted to play a little with the word “intertwined”, which was something I got a lot from the story; how both their destinies circled and converged to this point through choice and fate. You have her fire weaving through the tendrils of his darkness, and his hair curled around her finger.
Kata has a Kickstarter going on now to publish this story into book form, so please take a look! It’s one of the best Hades/Persephone stories that I’ve ever read.
“why are pillowfort/ao3 asking for money?? Tumblr and LJ are free!!!”
y’all really don’t get how this works, huh?
Look y’all. Bottom line is large websites/web apps are fucking expensive
It’s not like a personal or small business site where you pay $25/mo for a shared hosting package and knock yourself out
You need multiple, dedicated, high-performance servers to handle a service like Tumblr or AO3, or Facebook, or what have you, to keep up with the insane amount of bandwidth and unfathomable amount of data.
Shit cost thousands of dollars a month. And those costs only go up the more users you have. Into the tens of thousands of dollars a month. Someone has to foot the bill for it. And that doesn’t include the salaries of the developers who pour hours of their time into making things function the way they need to.
“but Tumblr used to not have ads!!” you say! “They just got greedy!”
No, they didn’t “just get greedy”. This is how free services work. They aren’t magically able to sustain themselves. At any point. Ever.
Investors see proof of concept during the infancy of a project, and they pour their money– hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars– to 1) help fund the project into maturity. (Maturity = stable performance and a large, growing userbase) and 2) have a seat at the table when big decisions are made
Until that point, you won’t see ads, or be nagged to donate, or forced to pay a fee to access your content. That’s no accident.
Investors eat the cost of running and developing the service, because they know that once that userbase has been established, they can– you guessed it– SELL YOUR DATA TO ADVERTISERS.
They can’t do that until after they have users for advertisers to sell their shit to!
That’s how the investors make their money back, that’s how the service becomes profitable instead of being a giant cash pit.
So for the love of God, can we PLEASE stop slandering sites like AO3, Wikipedia, and now Pillowfort for having the audacity to ask for donations, or for having tiered/paid membership options for additional, non-essential features??
THIS.
Seriously, in the wake of all this bullshit, younger fandom users desperately need to learn how to support their own we communities. If we don’t do this, all of the new platforms cropping up that promise to “not sell out”, like Pillowfort once it becomes stable, will inevitably be FORCED to sell to a larger corporation, that will not care about its users beyond their monetization value, or shut down. That’s how it works.
If we want noncommercial, minimal-advertising websites with competent staff that care about the opinions of their userbase, we need to fund them ourselves. If you like a platform, fund it. Throw a couple dollars their way when you have a couple dollars to spare, and spread the word when you don’t. Buy the stupid little ad-ons or cheap subscription service if your budget allows for it. If you don’t do those things, be prepared to lose whatever community you’ve built there, because sooner or later the site will be running at a deficit each month and the investors will get pissy, and they’re going to have “ideas”, and those ideas are going to be heavily divorced from what the userbase wants because to them, you’re nothing but ad revenue. Sad truth of business.
Don’t like it? Work to change it. Put your money where your mouth is.
