you know I love my big monster boys but where’s the love for like the junji-ito monsters? what about the humans that aren’t so human but aren’t immediately a hot demon or sexy fish beast? what about the actual scary humanoids??? sorry but I feel like that subcategory of teratophilia is waaaay to underrated

Ok, first of all thanks for making me aware of Junji Ito. I’m not too much into manga but the art looks great and I dig horror stories. So I’ll definitely check this out.

The thing is that I personally would classify stuff like that as horror. On tumblr teratophilia or monster love is mostly used to describe being horny on main for some monster dick (or pussy). At least that’s what I mean when I use these terms. I’m a simple gal.😋

I did a little searching and found tons of Junji Ito’s art and similar stuff here on tumblr. And judging by the notes it seems this art style is quite popular so I wouldn’t say these kind of monsters are an underrated subcategory of the teratophilia spectrum, they simply belong in a different genre. (I’m not quite sure if teratophilia is its own genre but gawwwd I wish it was…)

Anyway horror is fine by itself but I guess teratophilia means transforming the monsters of horror stories into love interests [insert long and well researched essay about sexual psychology and sociology here].

Your story/ies about the Fae are the best I’ve ever read! I can’t wait till you finish the book, I’m super excited. Meanwhile though, do you have any good fae books or stories that you can recommend? (I’ve already exhausted everything you’ve written so far 😂😅)

linkedsoul:

Thanks!! ❤

Uuh… right now I can’t think of anything particularly with Faes but…

Uprooted by Naomi Novik is a gorgeous piece of art and I totally recommend it, it doesn’t have faes but it’s one of my inspirations!

The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden: fairytale-like and Russian folklore! Def another of my inspirations!

Mahou Tsukai no Yome by Yamazaki Kore. It’s a manga but it’s a HUUUGE INSPIRATION, with Faes and magic and Celtic folklore, the art is gorgeous, the characters are lovely and the story is just enthralling!! I feel like reading it gives you a better hindsight on Stories of Qelt haha >u>”

With Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama. Another manga which inspired me a heckton, and the art is beautiful!! I totally recommend it!

Aria/Aqua series by Kozue Amano is not exactly a manga but it has some supernatural elements which make the whole story (gorgeously drawn, wholesome and makes you fall in love with the little things in life) even more enthralling.

The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss mentions Faes (I only read the first book for now tho) and is beautifully written. I’m in a period where I’m getting tired of traditional medieval fantasy so I didn’t expect myself to be so taken by the book and to finish it so fast!

AND ANY BOOK BY BRANDON SANDERSON, WHOSE EXISTENCE REASSURE ME EVERYTIME I GET ANOTHER IDEA FOR A NEW PROJECT BECAUSE THAT MAN IS WRITING SEVERAL 800+ PAGES BOOKS AT THE SAME TIME (also writes beautiful non-traditional fantasy with amazing characters and well-crafted magic systems)

That’s all I can think for now! I did read some other book with faes but the only one I can remember, I didn’t really like it >_>” and for now I don’t remember any titles… shame on me.

If anyone else has recommendations for good fae books, feel free to shoot me an ask!!

Rurouni kenshin is a manga about a samurai who used to he an assassin in a civil war and after that he decide to compensate his crimes by renouncing to kill people and helping them. There’s a character who especially reminds me to Kylo; Aoshi. He was a former evil guy that came to the good side but never became good. He attacked his adoptive father and stabbed him 42 times, before turning good. He stay with the good people for a girl who loves him, Misao. All the manga is about redemption.

This sounds totally up my alley! I’ll have to check it out.
Thanks, Anon!

Ugly Badass Girls Getting the Hot Guy in Fantasy and Science Fiction

fuck-yeah-monsters-and-villains:

A very specific list of books and movies with unconventional looking/conventionally unattractive heroines

Some good examples for ugly heroines are featured in this article (x)

“Ever notice how most heroines in novels just happen to also be devastatingly gorgeous? As if their long, flowing hair or sparkling eyes somehow make them more worthy of the title of heroine? Of course, given that so many classic popular novels about women were written about [sic] men, it kind of makes sense that literature would be so full of idealized versions of women that dude authors kind of wish they could hook up with.

It’d be nice if the occasional lady in literature was just, you know, a person, rather than some silk-skinned goddess or one of the other many adjectives that plague the women of literature who are just trying to go about their business of surviving whatever cruel plots the author has devised for them. I mean, there are plenty of male heroes in literature who get by with the looks of Cyrano de Bergerac, or Quasimodo, or Oscar Wao, or, more often than not, with no idea at all as to their general attractiveness. So, where are all the “ugly” ladies in literature?”

This article also makes some good points about the importance of ugly heroines. (x)

And here is my personal list (in no particular order):

Books

The mother of all ugly heroines.

The heroine perceives herself as unattractive. After being cursed
she spends the majority of the book as an old woman.

The heroine is certainly not as attractive as her beautiful best
friend who gets her own interesting plot line.

  • The
    Darkangel
(the Darkangel Trilogy, #1) – Meredith Ann Pierce

The protagonist starts out as unattractive, later she undergoes a transformation of
her appearance which represents a turning point in her character development.

This book has lots of female characters of all shapes and sizes.
The main heroine is plain and a bit overweight. Another important
famale character is dead and looks the part. Both have very
attractive love interests.

Very masculine looking heroine (hairy).

She’s plain.

Other characters in this book are baffled by the interest of
the very attractive male protagonist in the heroine.

  • Radiance (Wraith
    Kings, #1) – Grace Draven

This heroine is actually very attractive by human standards.
Unfortunately the male protagonist isn’t human and he finds her
appalling and he’s just as ugly to her. The like each other from the
start.

The heroine spends her time around
(mostly) human looking and extremely attractive trolls. She’s not
quite up to their standards.

The heroine is almost a cyborg. Her extremities were replaced by
completely overpowered prosthetics after a horrific assault while
working as a government agent. She’s traumatized, in pain, doesn’t
have full control of her new body and hasn’t come to terms with her
new menacing look. The rock star demon elf protagonist is very much
into her. Yes, really. This book uses and often subverts every trope
known to fantasy and science fiction.

  • Herb-Witch (Lord
Alchemist Duology, #1) – Elizabeth McCoy

Within the world described in this book the heroine’s look is not only considered
ugly but also shameful as it reveals her barbarian heritage.

The protagonist starts out as rather plain, later she undergoes a transformation of
her appearance which represents a turning point in her character development.

The heroine is fat. She does lose weight while trying to survive
on a hostile alien planet though. The lizard man protagonist is
interested in her either way. All kinds of trigger warnings for this
book: violence, rape, gore, death. It’s also over 900 pages long.
Crazy.

This one stands out as it’s the only book written by a man. It’s
also one of my earliest conscious encounters with an unattractive
female protagonist. For me that was a formative experience. Rather on
the hard side of science fiction the narrative follows the good
looking male protagonist who is a kind of emissary from a culture that values
aesthetics to the extreme coming to a planet where people live by a
more practical approach to life. The female protagonist assigned to him as his assistant is so ugly to him that he can’t
stop staring. After some culture clashing they get married.

Books I haven’t read yet:

Movies / TV series

I’m always looking for more of my beloved ugly heroines. They are quite difficult to find. So if you know of a book or a movie, please let me know! Reblog this with your suggestions, chat me up, ask or submit. All suggestions are welcome.

TAG: On my blog I use the “unconventional looking / conventionally unattractive heroine” tag.

Update:

@dasfeministmermaid suggested:

suggested for Brienne and Jaime (I haven’t read ASOIAF, so I don’t know how they are described in the book but Brienne and Aria from the TV series are certainly great unconventional looking female characters.)

Written by the wonderful @liberlibelulaart. I think everbody in the Reylo fandom knows her beautiful and often hilarious art.

Booktrailer:

Very cool to also have a manga on the list of unattrative heroines!

@amamymayer suggested:

Features a heavily scarred heroine.

Thank you for your suggestions. I hope there are still more books, movies and comics out there with conventionally unattractive heroines.

THE LEGEND OF BASARA (Manga)

In Basara’s post-apocalyptic setting, Japan has been controlled by a succession of corrupt and oppressive rulers of Saffron Clan. The current one is the Golden Emperor, a sovereign so obsessed with maintaining his power that he has had most of his children killed. He later appointed territories to the remaining children, allowing them to rule as subordinate kings and expend their energies in rivalries amongst each other, instead of trying to dethrone him. As a result, most of the Kings neglect the people they rule.

Though the peasants have been downtrodden for decades, they have not completely lost their rebellious spirit. Four swords named for the Ssu Ling gods – Byakko, Suzaku, Seiryū and Genbu – forged for fallen rebel leaders two generations past, are the symbols of underground resistance groups across Japan. The sword of Byakko is kept in Byakko Village, and according to a prophet, a child of fate who will lead a revolution will be born there. When a pair of twins are born – a girl and a boy – the prophet says that one of them is the child of destiny. Villagers believe the boy, Tatara, is the child of destiny, but ultimately the girl, Sarasa, is the leader. When the local ruler, the Red King, destroys her village and has her brother beheaded, she assumes his name and duty to lead her people in rebellion.

Sarasa undergoes psychological strain over having to pretend to be a boy. As such, she often visits hot springs to ‘let her hair down.’ During these visits, she runs into a mysterious young man named Shuri, and they fall in love with each other.

Unknown to Sarasa, Shuri is really the Red King, upon whom she has sworn revenge for destroying her village and killing her family. The Red King is likewise unaware that Sarasa, in her alter ego, is the rebel leader he is trying to kill. As the story progresses, the pair’s relationship deepens even as their struggle becomes more bloody.

Ep 003: Fuck You Light Yagami

Bleach

definitely Ulquiorra and Orihime from the anime ‘Bleach’. He’s a villain but one could also consider him a ‘monster’ since he’s artificially made by a bad person for bad purposes. Orihime and Ulquiorra’s relationship reminds me largely of Reylo due to a similar interrogation scene, an emotional hand reaching scene, and overall conversations that resemble Reylo’s dynamic.

At the very end of the series, it is implied in poems and overall subtext that the author wrote that Ulquiorra and Orihime had this type of connection/bond/friendship blooming, and Ulquiorra was in love with her by the end. (It’s sometimes a controversial topic, but that’s what I believe and is fairly obvious if you look into it)

Unfortunately Ulquiorra died while they held their hands out to each other, while Orihime tried to grasp his hand, it faded into the dust. In an extra drawing the author did, that moment signified they wanted to reach each other but were destined not to. It’s a tragic story and again, has a lot of subtext, but totally and utterly Reylo.

Here’s some videos of them:

Hellsing manga, an illustration I used for my meta about fairytales and Star Wars.
Conversation with lovely @fuck-yeah-monsters-and-villains reminded me of this drawing 🙂

It gives me so many reylo feels!
