Episode 017: Trench Coat Trash, Part I

Hello! I’m really enjoying the podcast; I especially enjoy the recommendations- I had completely missed Uprooted and was so delighted with it. I was wondering if y’all were planning on doing Sabriel, etc by Garth Nix? He’s a bit hit or miss (Clariel earns a quarter for the swear jar in this house) but I could write a thesis about the colonial symbolism and I rank it up with Fury Road as far as female characters from a male creator. Anyway, thanks for creating this lovely thing. Rock on!

metamashina:

Hey, yeah Uprooted is a good one! We’re glad you checked it out. One of our faves for sure.

We don’t have a Sabriel episode scheduled at the moment, but we’re very aware of how informative and influential it is as a fantasy novel. Not sure if you’ve read Winterspell by Claire Legrand for example, but it seems very influenced by Garth Nix.

We’ll cover it at some point. Right now we’re on sort of a sci fi kick but we’ll be shifting back to fantasy down the road.

Hello Harpies! I saw you blogging/tweeting about the french BatB which has made me hope that maybe someday you’ll do an episode about rewritten fairy tales…? Should this ever happen (please) I recommend watching the 2015 movie Tale of Tales (twisted, sensual and very dark) and my favourite collection of reworked fairy tales: Tanith Lee’s Red as Blood. The latter features among other well known stories the tale of a Rapunzel who is claimed by a dark god and a futuristic BatB. Happy podcasting!

metamashina:

Hi, thanks for the recs! All of those sound great.

We’re very much looking forward to recording a Beauty & the Beast episode with @corseque this week, where we’ll definitely cover some iterations of that specific fairy tale and we have Rapunzel episode coming out fairly soon as well.

We’ll probably cover re-tellings as we go, on a story by story basis (i.e., variations of BatB) as opposed to discussing re-tellings as a whole in one episode. We can go more in-depth that way and cover more ground.

Thanks for listening!

Great insights, as always!

Alien was one of those movies I shouldn’t have watched unsupervised as a kid (between age 6 and 7, I think). Two things happened back then: 1. I fell in love with the franchise and 2. I developed an anxiety disorder complete with panic attacks where I believed an alien grew in my throat. My mother had to take me to a doctor to check my throat….fun times.

Don’t worry., that was long ago, I’m fine now and I still love Alien. 😀
