THE LEGEND OF BASARA (Manga)
In Basara’s post-apocalyptic setting, Japan has been controlled by a succession of corrupt and oppressive rulers of Saffron Clan. The current one is the Golden Emperor, a sovereign so obsessed with maintaining his power that he has had most of his children killed. He later appointed territories to the remaining children, allowing them to rule as subordinate kings and expend their energies in rivalries amongst each other, instead of trying to dethrone him. As a result, most of the Kings neglect the people they rule.
Though the peasants have been downtrodden for decades, they have not completely lost their rebellious spirit. Four swords named for the Ssu Ling gods – Byakko, Suzaku, Seiryū and Genbu – forged for fallen rebel leaders two generations past, are the symbols of underground resistance groups across Japan. The sword of Byakko is kept in Byakko Village, and according to a prophet, a child of fate who will lead a revolution will be born there. When a pair of twins are born – a girl and a boy – the prophet says that one of them is the child of destiny. Villagers believe the boy, Tatara, is the child of destiny, but ultimately the girl, Sarasa, is the leader. When the local ruler, the Red King, destroys her village and has her brother beheaded, she assumes his name and duty to lead her people in rebellion.
Sarasa undergoes psychological strain over having to pretend to be a boy. As such, she often visits hot springs to ‘let her hair down.’ During these visits, she runs into a mysterious young man named Shuri, and they fall in love with each other.
Unknown to Sarasa, Shuri is really the Red King, upon whom she has sworn revenge for destroying her village and killing her family. The Red King is likewise unaware that Sarasa, in her alter ego, is the rebel leader he is trying to kill. As the story progresses, the pair’s relationship deepens even as their struggle becomes more bloody.

THE BALLAD OF HALO JONES graphic novel by Alan More & Ian Gibson
This graphic novel had a huge impact on me when I was a teenager.
It follows the main character Halo Jones from adolescence well into adulthood. Growing up in a futuristic giant housing complex where shopping expeditions are life endangering and despair and boredom kill its inhabitants she takes a chance to leave for space as an interstellar hostess. Later she becomes a mercenary fighting in a terrible war where she also meets her love interest who is basically a war criminal and tied to her past in ways that horrify her. I think I don´t give away too much by saying that in the end she never loses her moral compass.
Halo Jones is a well rounded character who takes her destiny into her own hands. She makes decisions and suffers the consequences, she grows, she learns and is never defined by familiy or the men she encounters. Halo loses people she loves and forms new, meaningful friendships. She falls in love but never gives herself up. Not bad for a graphic novel that was published in the ‘80s and written by a man. The novel is full of interesting female characters. I´m sure by today´s sensibilities there are many things to criticize. I won´t because I´m biased and I still love Halo as much as I loved her back when I was a teen.

You think this is your average YA novel? Think again! First published in 1982 it came long before the supernatural love interest was trending. I read this book as an adult and I never once had the feeling that I couldn’t relate to the young heroine. This trilogy features incredibly imaginative worldbuilding, a wealth of interesting secondary characters and universal themes including love, friendship and betrayal. I was crying by the end and I mean crying, like actual salt water leaking from my eyes.

definitely Ulquiorra and Orihime from the anime ‘Bleach’. He’s a villain but one could also consider him a ‘monster’ since he’s artificially made by a bad person for bad purposes. Orihime and Ulquiorra’s relationship reminds me largely of Reylo due to a similar interrogation scene, an emotional hand reaching scene, and overall conversations that resemble Reylo’s dynamic.
At the very end of the series, it is implied in poems and overall subtext that the author wrote that Ulquiorra and Orihime had this type of connection/bond/friendship blooming, and Ulquiorra was in love with her by the end. (It’s sometimes a controversial topic, but that’s what I believe and is fairly obvious if you look into it)
Unfortunately Ulquiorra died while they held their hands out to each other, while Orihime tried to grasp his hand, it faded into the dust. In an extra drawing the author did, that moment signified they wanted to reach each other but were destined not to. It’s a tragic story and again, has a lot of subtext, but totally and utterly Reylo.
Here’s some videos of them:

Agneta and The Sea King, John Bauer
Getting some Reylo vibes from that story.
Another example of a creature of darkness or the Underground falling for a young maiden who lives in the light, and in this one, just like Hades, he comes up to the surface and kidnaps the girl while she’s picking flowers.
“"Just tell me who you are!“ Agneta repeated. “If I can help you, I will gladly do so, and if I cannot help you myself, perhaps my father can for he is a powerful man.” Then the stranger began to speak: “no, you. You alone can give me peace and happiness.“His voice was mild and gentle like a breeze rustling in the sails of a ship. And again he raised his arm in supplication. Agneta had never seen a more beautiful face. Heavy, wet locks framed his cheeks, his purple lips opened to a gentle smile. Most wondrous of all, though, were his eyes. Agneta had never thought eyes could express such sorrow and tenderness. They were like the depths of the sea, which had so often captivated her gaze – one moment dark and mysterious, the next filled with glistening sunlight. Agneta stepped on to the furthest stones at the edge of the water. "Tell me who you are” she demanded a third time. ”
“"Will you just leave me like that?“ called the sea king in a voice full of pain. "Shall I just return to my realm as lonely as ever? At least give me a keepsake to comfort me on my way. Give me the lime blossom you carry in your hand. As long as the scent lasts I shall believe you are close to me.” Agneta stretched out her hand with the lime blossom and said: “Gladly will I give you that. Here, take it.” The sea king reached out for the blossom and took hold of Agneta’s hand. Then he reached for her waist and lifted her up in his arms. She struggled and cried, but he dived down into the depths with her. At the same moment the sun set and soon the clouds paled and night fell. ”
Seriously, I would love to see some nice fanarts of Kylo as the Sea King, butt naked, with glorious locks falling down his back xD
Had to reblog this because I’m in the mood again, damn gods, fearies and elves, always horny for human girls.
BTW he makes her forget her human life and she agrees to marry him but the story ends with Agneta returning home after 7 years (during which she birthed 7 children, ffs) because she get’s her memories back and misses her father.
