Working nights isn’t all the bad. You only really have to deal with your coworkers, and even your boss is over an intercom. Sure, heavy lifting isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but for you, this couldn’t be better. You’d much rather be dealing with heavy cargo than the cumbersome burden of customers. Working freight has been a blessing in disguise.
Your boss, or at least the overseer for everything, usually keeps to himself. He stays back in the central office, keeping tabs on the trucks that are coming and going as well as checking up with everyone’s progress. He’s not a bad guy just kind of…weird. Ok very weird. He was extremely pale, almost looking like an opal gemstone. He had long limbs like a taffy pull had stretched him. You hadn’t seen him often, but he left an impression, especially his hands. His fingers were super long, and you almost expected them to have extra joints. He’s worked for the company for a long time, but whenever you or your coworkers see him his appearance doesn’t match the age you expect him to be.
“I wonder what sort of skin care he does,” you coworker Amber says. You’re all crowded around the vending machines when he stepped out of the office. His hair is silvery and pale and falls before his eyes, nearly blending with his skin. He looks young but the way people talk he sounds like he should be in his fifties or sixties.
Another attack, another robbery. This time it happened to the
miller.
It was already a pattern. During the full moon, everyone in your
village was going into hiding, bolting the doors and keeping some
silver, if their household posessed any, at hand’s reach in case the pack chose their home as their
next target.
They lived in an abandoned house in the forest, which they made
into their den a couple of months ago. The pack consisted of a few members, led by Rolf,
their alpha. You saw him a couple of times. Arrogant, hostile, walked
around the village as if he owned the place. Well… he kinda did. His
pack controlled everything and they took whatever they wanted from
the people, and they didn’t do it in a gentle manner.
But after you saw the millers wife tending to the deep slash
wounds on her husbands chest, from where one of the werewolves had
pushed him away and his claws cut into his flesh, you felt anger
boiling up in you.
You finished reading your new book and sighed, leaning back on the
tree. Another one crossed off your reading list. You smiled,
looking around, admiring how the setting summer sun drowned
everything in golden light. You were sitting in your favorite spot,
in the forest near where you lived. When the weather was nice, you
always came here to read, or just chill and listen to the birds. You
shoved the last marshmallow from the bag into your mouth and started
packing up the blanket, snacks and the book into the basket.
On the way home, you turned around the corner, not paying
attention what was in front of you, and crushed with a huge, solid
body. You fell back and the content of your basket spilled on the
sidewalk, dozens of candy wrappers covering it and shining like gems.
You immediately felt ashamed.
“I am so sorry!” you heard someone saying and you felt strong
hands on your arms that helped you stand up. You looked up and saw it
was an orc, a really big one, with a gym bag that hung from his
shoulder, and you tried not to stare or turn red. He had short black
hair, a stubble and a loose shirt on and there was a scar on one of his thick
eyebrows. There were a couple of tattoos on his forearms and his
chest was really broad. You wondered how you didn’t lose
consciousness after colliding with that mass.
“No, it’s my fault, I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
you said with a smile.
“Well, I wasn’t either.” he smiled back at you , showing his
impressive tusks and started helping you with collecting your things
from the ground. Picking up the wrappers took you some time and you
were mortified. He gave you the book, and glanced at the remaining
candy in your basket. He didn’t comment on it but smiled at you.
“Sorry again, have a nice day.” You turned around to continue
walking but when you looked back after a few steps, he was still
there, looking after you with a strange expression. You flushed and
kept walking.
