You think this is your average YA novel? Think again! First published in 1982 it came long before the supernatural love interest was trending. I read this book as an adult and I never once had the feeling that I couldn’t relate to the young heroine. This trilogy features incredibly imaginative worldbuilding, a wealth of interesting secondary characters and universal themes including love, friendship and betrayal. I was crying by the end and I mean crying, like actual salt water leaking from my eyes.

DEATH’S MASTER (Tales from the Flat Earth, #2) by Tanith Lee

The soul is a magician. Only living flesh hampers it.“

– from Death’s Master

Death’s Master, winner of the August Derleth Award for Fantasy, is the second book of the stunning arabesque high fantasy series Tales from the Flat Earth, which, in the manner of the One Thousand and One Nights, portrays an ancient world in mythic grandeur via connected tales.

Long time ago when the Earth was Flat, beautiful indifferent Gods lived in the airy Upperearth realm above, curious passionate demons lived in the exotic Underearth realm below, and mortals were relegated to exist in the middle.

Uhlume, Lord of Death, second of thķe Lords of Darkness, King of Shadow and Pallor, makes an unusual bargain which sets in motion an intricate sequence of events that entangle men and gods, queens and kings, sorcerers and witches, and lowly wanderers. When the secret to immortality falls into human hands, dark magic and wickedness are unleashed, testing the bounds of mortal love and sanity, and questioning the nature and purpose of life itself.

Come within this ancient world of brilliant darkness and beauty, of glittering palaces and wondrous elegant beings, of cruel passions and undying love.

Rediscover the exotic wonder that is the Flat Earth.

Reylo vibe recommendation by @k10c2
I strongly second this recommendation. 😍 I’ve decided that each of the ‘Tales from the Flat Earth’ books will get it’s own post.

Very sensual, reminiscent of 1001 nights, featuring a wide cast of characters over the course of 5 books but always returning to beautiful and casually cruel Azhrarn, Lord of Demons who occasionally has a soft spot for humanity.

While the reylo vibe is not as strong in the first of this series it will still make you fall in love with Tanith Lee’s creation and her characters.

THE LEGEND OF THE ICE PEOPLE by Margit Sandemo (47 volumes)

“Once upon a time, many centuries ago, Thengil the Evil went out to the wilderness and sold his soul to the Devil. He became the forefather of the Ice People. For wealth and power, one of his descendants, in every generation, would be cursed to serve the devil and perform evil deeds. Their distinguishing feature would be yellow cat eyes and they would possess magical powers. Some say they will never be free of the curse until they unearth the urn containing the potion that Tengel the Evil used to summon the Devil. It is said one day a child of his blood will be born, gifted with knowledge and wisdom the like of which the world has never known before who will end the family curse. So says the legend but no one knows if it’s true.

In the 16th century, a cursed child of the Ice People was born. He tried to turn evil to good, and therefore he was called Thengil the Good. This saga is about his family. Or rather it is about the women in his family.”

Reylo vibe recommendation by @ever-hungry-aria who says: “It has a Reylo vibe, a huge one. Many guys in that family are basically Kylo, have powers, are cursed by their own blood, they have interesting looks (scary, but imagine Khal Drogo, but with like a demonic aura and yellow eyes holy shit), but (mostly) fight to become better. The first introduced couple is very much like Reylo, but without the girl having powers. The story has also many interesting romances, with folktale creatures, demons, fucking dark angels, take your pick :D"

Additional information by @neoma2: “ I believe Shira and Mar from the 17th volume of, bear some similarities with reylo.
They both come from the Ice People and both were born with special powers – but while she is “the chosen one”, he is “the afflicted one” – on the apparently bad side. She will have to go on a mission to get something essential for Ice People story and has been prepared for that for her whole life. He from birth is servant of Shama, spirit of stone and death.
They are like opposite, but equal – and Mar will play crucial role in her journey, even though his Master opposes it. Also, Shira during one task of her mission has to resolve her mixed feeling for Mar.”

Yes, I’m aware that this is the author who holds a controversial opinion about Kylo Ren’s redemption arc. ANYWAY let’s separate the art from the artist because this book definitely has strong REYLO VIBES.
A girl of mysterious descent awakening to her strange powers and a beautiful but incredibly destructive god complete with a redemption arc must work together to gain their freedom and become their true selves. I mean….

I guess this is one of Robin McKinley’s lesser known books. A dreamlike story that features a romance between a young woman who’s really good with bees and a man who’s not quite human anymore.

THE BEAR AND THE NIGHTINGALE by Katherine Arden

At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.

After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.

And indeed, crops begin to fail, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer, and misfortune stalks the village. All the while, Vasilisa’s stepmother grows ever harsher in her determination to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for either marriage or confinement in a convent.

As danger circles, Vasilisa must defy even the people she loves and call on dangerous gifts she has long concealed—this, in order to protect her family from a threat that seems to have stepped from her nurse’s most frightening tales.

Reblogging myself because I’ve been listening to the Metamashina podcast today. They did a great in-depth analysis of this book.

A resilient young heroine, a mysterious demon, russian folklore and a great evil lurking in the woods and in the hearts of men…

HAWKSONG by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes

DANICA SHARDAE IS an avian shapeshifter, and the golden hawk’s form in which she takes to the sky is as natural to her as the human one that graces her on land. The only thing more familiar to her is war: It has raged between her people and the serpiente for so long, no one can remember how the fighting began. As heir to the avian throne, she’ll do anything in her power to stop this war—even accept Zane Cobriana, the terrifying leader of her kind’s greatest enemy, as her pair bond and make the two royal families one.

Trust. It is all Zane asks of Danica—and all they ask of their people—but it may be more than she can give.

DARKLING by K. M. Rice

How far would you go to save your family?

Midsummer used to be a day of feasts and bonfires. A day when cares were set aside for the joy of grass between our toes, warm hands in our palms, laughter in our hearts. Our celebrations dimmed with the light. Something upset the balance of our woods. Something so deep that even our bonfires can’t lure the sun back. And he has something to do with it. Of that we’re sure, which is why I’m being given to him.

DARKLING is K.M. Rice’s suspenseful debut novel about a young woman’s sacrifice to save her village and the unexpected strength that comes from first love.
